Siberian (Amur) tigers, the largest cats in the world, are critically endangered by the loss of their habitat and poaching. Siberian tigers live primarily in the birch forests of Russia, with smaller numbers in China and North Korea. Young cubs stay with their mothers until they are 18 months to three years of age; they are adults by their fourth year. The tigers kill by biting either the back of the neck (severing the spinal cord) or the throat (crushing the esophagus).
