Some salamanders can shed their tails when attacked. The shed tail keeps twitching, which distracts the predator. The name salamander is Greek for fire lizard, as they were once thought to be able to walk through fire. Poisonous salamanders are often brightly coloured to advertise their toxicity to potential predators. Most salamanders are 4 - 6 inches long, although the Chinese and Japanese giant salamanders can reach 5 feet.

The unique making process of these porcelain pendants allows for more detail in designs than other mediums. These designs are fired into the clay at 2200 degrees, so they will not peel or wear off. Each piece is surprisingly lightweight.
