Rock doves (domestic pigeons), originally from Europe, North Africa, and India, were brought to the U.S. in the 1600s. Historically the term rock doves was used to refer to feral pigeons (escaped domesticated pigeons). Rock doves mate for life unless separated by death or accident, and each pair raises four to five broods annually. Unlike most birds, that must tip their heads back to swallow water, rock doves can suck water up directly.
