Mother with her Chick
A small sand-colored bird, piping plovers are found on thinly vegetated sand beaches and rocky shorelines of North America. They are known to 'run, stop, and inspect' the sand as they forage for marine invertebrates. Piping plovers use an elaborate 'broken wing display' to distract people and predators away from their chicks' beach nests. Beach development, RVs, predation by dogs, cats and other wild predators all contribute to the plovers' endangered status.
