Within the saga of Fallout, the keystone of humanity's survival is a remnant of an Armed Forces detachment that survived the Nuclear Holocaust of 2077. Known as the Brotherhood of Steel, its military origins began on January 3, 2076. The brotherhood was a specialized unit that was created as a joint operation of the United States Armed Forces and a secret government scientific research department. On October 23, 2077 the great war between the United States and China began, it lasted only 2 hours and reduced the world into a vast Radioactive Wasteland. By the grace of fortune, a detachment of the Brotherhood survived the carnage.

Days after the onslaught, the remaining unit forged its way through the devastation, eventually finding sanctuary in a government fallout shelter called "Lost Hills". Almost no information survives in regards to the Brotherhood of Steel until the year 2134, when the surviving outpost began its quest to collect pre-war technology.

In the Brotherhood Symbolism the gears represent their Engineering Knowledge.

The Sword is their will to defend themselves. The Wings represent the uplifting hope that the acquisition of lost technology will bring Mankind's Salvation following the Great War. Lastly, The Circle symbolizes the fraternal unity that makes the organization a true Brother Hood.
