Gray whales inhabit coastal waters of the Northern Pacific ocean with distinct Eastern and Western geographic populations. Gray whales eat tiny sea creatures, filtering them through their baleen, the stiff, bristle-like structures that line their upper jaws. One of the greatest of migrators, grays can travel over 12,000 miles each year between their feeding and breeding grounds. The Gray whale is readily identifiable. It has mottled gray skin, two blowholes, and a hump with spinal bumps behind its head.
