The mystical Odin, father and chief of the Norse gods, passed his knowledge of magic and rune lore to poets, sorcerers and sages.

Runes are more than mere letters of an ancient alphabet. They are in fact actual mysteries secrets of the universe for those who understand them. Starting around 200 BC, the mighty Guild of Runemasters taught their craft throughout all the tribes of Northern Europe; Goths, Scandinavians, Germans and English. Rune lore is the oldest tradition of initiatory wisdom and magic of the Germanic world. Through the runic keys we may unlock the wisdom and magical power of the ancient past.

The origin of this collection of binding runes is in Icelandic Magic. They are known as Galdor-Staves, or Galdrastafir and were developed by Icelandic magicians during the Middle Ages. Medieval Icelandic magic worked through use of graphic signs (or staves), spoken or written words and natural substances, such as herbs. One alone or a combination of these three was used in ritual magic. The staves, which include runes, are said to be the doorways through which the magician directs the powers and entities he has called on to do his bidding. These magical runes called upon ancient gods and goddesses to work their spells; such as to win favour from a secret love or to be protected from evil. Much of what we know about Icelandic magic has been translated in The Galdrabok, (Icelandic grimoire).
