Downy woodpeckers are year-round residents of North America, and are the smallest of all woodpeckers. Downy woodpeckers have no song, but drum 15 -17 times per second to announce their territory, and to attract a mate. Downy's peck out a hole in the dead wood of fallen trees and even fence posts, where they build their nests. Downy's have zygodactyl feet; some toes face forward and some backward, which helps them grip trees and vertical objects.

The unique making process of these porcelain pendants allows for more detail in designs than other mediums. These designs are fired into the clay at 2200 degrees, so they will not peel or wear off. Each piece is surprisingly lightweight.

Chain option comes with a 2 mm flat link stainless steel chain of either 18 , 20 , 22 inch standard length or a 18 inch chain with an extension up to 4 inches ( 22 inch total ) in length for more flexibility and a lead free pewter accent bead. Wear them with or without bead!
