These tortoises survive extremes in desert temperatures by digging underground burrows where they spend 98% of their time. Desert tortoises can survive a year without drinking water, and have a lifespan of 80 to 100 years. Coyotes, bobcats, foxes and ravens prey upon the soft-shelled young, but only a mountain lion can crush an adult's heavy shell. Despite current conservation efforts, desert tortoise populations remain vulnerable to habitat loss, predation, and disease.

The unique making process of these porcelain pendants allows for more detail in designs than other mediums. These designs are fired into the clay at 2200 degrees, so they will not peel or wear off. Each piece is surprisingly lightweight.
