Cthulhu is an Elder God imagined by H.P. Lovecraft in his Mythical Writings. Lovecraft was never a widely published writer, during his lifetime: only a slender book was published, but as his stories began to appear in magazines CTHULHU MYTHOLOGY became more evident-deriving its name from "The Call of Cthulhu" published in the pulp magazine Wierd Tales in 1928. This was the first story clearly revealing Lovescraft's design: "All my stories, unconnected as they may be, are based on the fundamental lore or legend that this world was inhabited at one time by another race who, in practicing black magic, lost their foothold and were expelled yet live on outside ever ready to take possession of this earth again."

As Lovecraft conceived the deities of his mythos, there were the Elder Gods-representing the Forces of Good and existing peacefully and rarely stirring forth to intervene in the unceasing struggle between th Powers of Evil were also known as the Great Old Ones-one trait of which is a limitation on their influence which is why Cthulhu is imprisoned beneath the Paciic Ocean in the city of R'lyeh.
